8vo [21.5 x 14.5 cm]; x, 375 pp, illustrations from photos, endpaper maps showing author's route, profile of Serra Acarai Rain Forest, index and glossary. original cloth, gilt spine title lettering, corner slightly bumped, clean and near fine in good dj (rubbed, spine end chipped, but not price clipped). The author was the first white man to penetrate these forests of Amazonia drained by the upper parts of the Rio Trombetas in British Guiana near the Brazilian border, where he found tribes of Indians whose existence was only legendary up to then. He describes the native peoples, their activities, customs, beliefs, religion, as well as the botany and the rain forests, based on two expeditions over a four year period. Guppy, the first to write of the people there, describes their art as becoming increasingly abstract and the reasons for it. A picture of this book is available on request.

Some edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners and folds rubbed, price clipped, no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy for its age. 375pp, lavishly illustrated. The story of anthropologist, botanist, explorer and art dealer Nicholas Guppy's (1925-2012), stay amongst the Wai-Wai, the reputed White Indians of legend and a tribe 'untouched by civilisation, marvellous in the beauty of their painted bodies and feather ornaments', in the remote regions of the upper Essequibo river on the Brazilian border. Guppy describes the tribe's complicated system of values, myths and expression, free from the neuroses and strains of 'civilised' societies, and explains how they tackle economic, social, sexual, artistic and psychological problems.
