The completed work has been described by Frank Weitenkampf as "the first notable American effort to produce a richly illustrated book"; and William J. Linton, in 'The History of Wood-Engraving in America', wrote: "Drawing, engraving and printing were all marvels at the time of this book's production; and has well deserved the popularity it immediately obtained." John G. Chapman (1808-1889), painter, provided the greater part of the illustrations, which were engraved by Joseph Alexander Adams (1803-1880) and his students. This is the first American book in which the illustrations are executed by electrotype. Binding with some scuffing along edges and boards, more pronounced at joints and head and tail of spine. Lightly cracked for three inches at lower front joint. Block lightly age-toned.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. One of the crowning achievements in early American book-making, this remarkable volume represented some of the most elaborate design and innovative processes ever attempted here. It was announced in 1843, and printed in 54 issues. Once all issues were released, subscribers could have them bound into a single book. For an extra cost, the owner's name and a picture of their church could be engraved on the cover. In this case, the (person's) name was omitted, but Trinity Church of New York adorns the front cover. There are also interior views of a church engraved onto the rear cover and the top and bottom panels of the spine. This copy has been professionally restored and as such can be handled and read without holding one's breath. Wood-engraved illustrations throughout. All page edges gilt. New endpapers. Inner dentelles. Gilt remains strong. Pages with typical light browning and foxing. The once loose original family records (of Joseph Sherwood, et al.) have been returned to their appropriate place, preceding the New Testament.

Harper's Illuminated Bible was annnounced in 1843 and was originally issued in 54 fascicles, with the bound edition appearing in 1846. The first Bible to be printed in America using electrotype plates, it has been hailed by David Bland as "a technical tour de force" (History of Book Illustration, p.303). HILLS 1161, quoting Frank Weitenkampf: ".this Harper publication was a remarkable production for its time and place, and retains its importance in the annals of American book-making." HAMILTON 198, also quoting Weitenkampf: ".the first notable American effort to produce a richly illustrated book." Copies in the trade binding are uncommon in commerce, and generally appear well-worn thanks to the book's unwieldy weight and dimensions. This copy is uncommonly fresh and very sturdy, showing none of the usual tendency to crack at the hinges and just minimal rubbing to the boards.
