Book First Edition Signed
First edition, second printing (a month after the run in June). This is a very near fine copy. The dust wrapper is slightly worn at the edges though has not been price clipped. There is a small brown stain to the rear panel. The internals are clean throughout and free from toning. The text blocks are bright and white, but with some very slight foxing. The author's signature is inscribed "Dearest Tod, with my love, Daphne, Christmas 1949". Tod, the recipient, is actually Maud Waddell, who was one of several governesses for the Du Maurier children, who is regarded as having a strong influence on Daphne in particular for her strength and passion for reading. The nickname, 'Tod', stems from the Beatrix Potter character, Mr. Tod. Overall, this is a fine copy with a sparkling association. In a Cornish house lives the widowed Stella, a woman of considerable gifts and beauty who regularly rejects proposals of marriage from her neighbour Robert Hanson. Cherry, Stella's daughter, brings home her artist husband Evan for the first time and Stella is shocked by the bohemian incompleteness of their marriage.
