Illustrated frontis; additional 6 plates from reproductions and photographs. The dust jacket has some wear at the top and bottom of the spine. Illustrated with 13 plates, including "The Clearing" on the frontispiece. This copy has a previous owner's signature on front free end paper. Carr explores her beliefs about creativity, answering the questions, "What attracted me to this subject?" "Why do I want to paint it?" "What am I trying to express?" Other chapters explore drawing and insubordination, the difference between nude and naked and colour-sense. A moving self-portrait of the great Canadian artist, written just before her death in 1945, and dedicated to her friend Lawren Harris.
