Pictorial wrappers, fine. New York, H. N. Abrams, 1987. 4to. 28 x 24 cms. 208 pp. Richly illustrated, largely in colour. With list of works, chronology of exhibitions, selected bibliography and index. Occasioned by an exhibition ath the National Gallery of Art, Washington, May 24-September 27, 1987 and the Detroit Institute of Arts, November 13, 1988-January 22, 1989. - - - The wonderful Helga Pictures are a series of more than 268 paintings and drawings of German model Helga Testorf created by American artist Andrew Wyeth between 1971 and 1985. In 1986, Philadelphia publisher and millionaire Leonard E. B. Andrews (1925-2009) purchased almost the entire collection, preserving it intact, later selling it to a Japanese company. Wyeth had already given a few Helga paintings to friends, including the famous Lovers, which had been given as a gift to Wyeth's wife. The works were exhibited at the National Gallery of Art in 1987 and in a nationwide tour. There was extensive criticism of both the 1987 exhibition and the subsequent tour for being "voyeuristic", and the show has been labeled "the most polarizing National Gallery exhibition of the late 1980s".

Some minor bumping to extremities of dust jacket, else fine. This book presents to the public for the first and only time every work in the series of portraits of Helga Testorf - from a small, closely observed sketch of Helga's eye, through numerous lush studies of Helga asleep, to rich, highly polished drybrushes and temperas. Abundantly clear on page after page is that the Wyeth-Helga collaboration is unique in American art. In more than 100 colorplates and 16 black and whites, Helga takes her place among those few models, like Rembrandt's Saskia and Picasso's Dora Maar, who were transformed by artistic genius inot symbols of all women.
