Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Quarto 8 1/2" x 11", 66 pages, self-wraps, screened photographic black and white offset, wire saddle stitch. A very good, clean solid copy with some little foxing at the edges and slight scattered stains to the cover sheet, interior fine. This is a reproduction of portions of John Thoreau's blank book started in 1839, taken up and continued by his sister upon his death in 1842, and then given to Ellen Sewall to whom both John and Henry had proposed marriage) in 1876 before Sophia's death and continued by her and her children until 1917. Material chosen by Harding not available in reprint elsewhere at the time of publication, and includes uncommon photographic reproduction of letters, photographs, contemporary newspaper articles, drawings, poems.
