Signed
[4 pp.] bifolium, mounted. Folio (17 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches). Land indenture and discharge. The original indenture, dated 28 August 1795 was for the sale of land in Poughkeepsie by William Ely, physician, and his wife Alice, to William Inman, Gentleman, of Philadelphia. William Ely, of Clinton, "had at one time a large practice, but neglected his work, and died in the alms house," (Frank Hasbrouck: The History of Dutchess County, New York, Volume 1, p. 563); he was a founding member of New York Medical Society formed in 1806. The indenture is signed by Cadwallader Colden, Gilbert Livingston, and Robert H. Livingston, registered 19th September 1795. The discharge is signed along the margin of the first page, dated the 9th of March, 1797, by William Ely, Gilbert Livingston, and Smith Thompson (1768-1843) who would go on to become a Supreme Court Justice. Very good, folded and edge worn, contents browned, with a few tears at the folds.
