PAPERBACK, very good, slightest wear. SHABTAI, AHARON. Love & selected poems. Translated from the Hebrew by Peter Cole. Riverdale-on-Hudson, New York: The Sheep Meadow Press, 1997, xxii, 221pp., . "In his fusions of the sensual and the spiritual, the ordinary and the exalted, the sexual in the suffering psyche and the intelligent conciousness searching and spinning through history, myth and layers of language, Shabtai is one of the most exciting poets writing anywhere, and certainly the most audacious" (C.K. Williams). These poems, written between 1966 and 1995, juxtapose the personal with the universal and the everyday with the mythical in terse, expert observations: "I'll ready the offering: /myself/(I don't want myself except/to offer myself)//my blood is my fate/and my fate the deep//music of your voice" ("Love"). The result is a sacred and erotic poetry greater than the sum of its parts, one that "can be placed in a line that stretches from Biblical and Greek origins, to Catullus to Joyce to Jean Genet and other masters of language, revelry, and revelation" (Stanley Moss). 9781878818782 ISBN 1878818783.

Boards (HB) in very good condition An ex library book, it has rubs inside of front and back cover from card removal and two stamps on title page. The dust jacket is in very good condition in clean library brodaart cover with three stickers on back and lower spine. Really a nice clean copy for an ex lib. Aharon Shabtai, now in his late fifties, is the most important Israeli poet of his generation. Translated freely, this means he is among the world's leading poets. His poetry is of epic range: personal and historical, full of hard-won knowledge and the sexual dramas the Greeks allowed their gods and themselves. Shabtai can be placed in a line that stretches from Biblical and Greek origins to Catullus to Joyce to Jean Genet and other masters of language, revelry, and revelation. This is his first book to be published in English. Translated by Peter Cole. In his fusions of the sensual and the spiritual, the ordinary and the exalted, the sexual in the suffering psyche and the intelligent consciousness searching and spinning through history, myth and layers of language, Shabtai is one of the most exciting poets writing anywhere, and certainly the most audacious-C.K. Williams. 222 pages.

Softcover. Condition: g to vg-. First edition. Octavo. 15pp. Original pink wrappers, sunned to a tan color. This scarce and intriguing publication is a Jewish prayer book created as a result of sever casualties in the city of Trieste during the outbreak of the Third Cholera Pandemic (1846-1860). The year of this publication, 1855, was noted as having been a particularly bad one in terms of fatalities in the city, prompting religious leaders to react and provide spiritual support to their communities. This work, assembled by Abraham Vita Chai Morpurgo and Aharon Luzzatto, contains two readings of two relevant biblical Psalms (91 and 20) plus an original prayer created by Trieste Rabbi, Sabbato Graziadio Treves (c.1780 - 1856) in 1836, during the previous cholera epidemic. A fascinating piece of social, medical and religious history, which sheds light on the state of the Trieste Jewish community of the mid 19th century. Text pages throughout in Hebrew and Italian, in a number of period fonts and sizes. Wrappers sunned, with light stains, smudges, and some light rubbing/chipping to corners. Both the front and back wrappers contains some period indecipherable manuscript writing in ink. Pages throughout with some light creasing, as well as some light sporadic stains, mostly in the margins. Wrappers in good, interior in very good- condition overall. Hebrew title: (sic) תפ××" ×עצ×× ×ª ×"××'פ×" Alternate: תפ×××" ×עצ×× ×ª ×"××'פ×" Bibliographic reference: Vinograd, Trieste 25. It is interesting to note that it was in response to these cholera pandemics, that a number of noted rabbis including Akiva Eiger, Yisrael Salanter and Moshe Sofer (Hatam Sofer) are known to have made consequential halakhic rulings mandating various situation specific actions (even those which violated Jewish laws) in order to save lives during this deadly period ("Pikuach Nefesh"). These had consequential effects, and were responsible for setting many historical precedents in the observance of Jewish law during epidemics, including most recently the COVID pandemic.
