Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. First Edition (Appleton (1) on the last page). This is a very, very rare book. I found only one other copy for sale on the Internet. That copy less expensive but in poor shape. The covers of this book are in very nice shape, particularly taking into account their age. They are quite clean, one small white spot near the top edge of the rear cover. The black lettering on the front and spine is nicely bright. There is one small tear off the bottom edge of the spine (second photo). The cover edges look very good. The corners too, with just a speck-sized spot of rubbing at the front bottom one. The book is also square with a straight spine and a solid binding, pages and covers. The book has one issue of some significance, the reason for the Minus in the condition rating, the early pages have a fair amount of light amber foxing. By page 12 it has mostly gone away. Then as I turn the pages I continue to see a little of it off the top page edge, a little off the bottom page edge, not terribly conspicuous. Only very occasionally is there a page or two where it is heavier, page 70 and 71 for example. Then there is little to none over the next 70 or so pages whereupon you begin to see again some of this light spotting off the top edge, though not reaching the print. It's a kind of back-and-forth between those two things, little to none and then some off the top edge, mostly little to none until you reach the last 15 or 20 pages where there's some again off the top edge. The middle page edge also has a freckling of these amber spots which doesn't have much impact on the actual pages, occasionally a little spot just off the edge. Otherwise the pages seem to be pretty clean. I don't see any handling soiling. I don't see any turned-down corners or placeholder creases. I saw the very occasional thin crease off the top edge. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. There is a small penned inscription on the front end paper dated 1923, Evelyn from (somebody). From Wikipedia: 'Gwladys Ethel Gwendolen Eugénie Sutherst (1884- 1959), after 1905 Gwladys, Marchioness Townshend, was a British writer. In addition to writing novels, poems, and plays, she was probably 'the first peeress to write for the cinema.' She also served a term as Mayor of King's Lynn. The details of her marriage and finances were often aired in the courtroom and in newspapers. She was credited as the scenarist on eight silent films, all of them now lost, made by the Clarendon studio, all of them made in 1913, 1914 or 1915, all starring Dorothy Bellew and directed by Wilfred Noy. Titles included The Convent Gate, The House of Mystery, and A Strong Man's Love. Her play Sir John and the Compriere was produced in 1914, in London. She co-edited a fiction collection, True Ghost Stories (1936). Her autobiography, It Was, and It Wasn't, was published in 1937. Other books by Townshend included a book of poems, In the King's Garden (1906), and a novel, The Widening Circle (1920). The current Marquess Townshend, Charles Townshend, is her grandson. Music producer and sound engineer Cenzo Townshend is her great-grandson.'.
