Hardback, Pages: 346 pages, Size:210 x 275 mm Illustrations:250 col. Language(s):English. ISBN 9781912554751. This volume honors Maryan W. Ainsworth, curator emerita at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and former adjunct professor at Barnard College, whose work as a scholar, curator, and teacher has profoundly impacted the study of early northern European painting. Contributions by leading specialists from museums and academia, including former interns and fellows, reflect Ainsworth?s emphasis on the centrality of the object and on the interdisciplinary methods of technical art history, while also paying homage to the variety of Ainsworth?s research interests as a whole. The essays explore topics such as the working methods of individual artists, workshop practice, artistic collaboration, and patronage across a range of media?mainly painting, but also manuscript illumination, drawing, tapestry, sculpture, and stained glass. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition?. Hardcover. oblong, black cloth clamshell case w/ illustration. Vol.1: oblong, black wrappers w/ illustration & gilt printing; 175p w/ color illustrations. Vol.2: oblong, black cloth boards w/ illustration & gilt printing; marbled pastedowns & endpapers; approx 192 color plates. Newly uncovered illuminations from the Renaissance depicting miraculous phenomena .The Book of Miracles that first surfaced a few years ago and recently made its way into an American private collection is one of the most spectacular new discoveries in the field of Renaissance art. The nearly complete surviving illustrated manuscript, which was created in the Swabian Imperial Free City of Augsburg around 1550, is composed of 169 pages with large-format illustrations in gouache and watercolor depicting wondrous and often eerie celestial phenomena, constellations, conflagrations, and floods as well as other catastrophes and occurrences. It deals with events ranging from the creation of the world and incidents drawn from the Old Testament, ancient tradition, and medieval chronicles to those that took place in the immediate present of the books author and, with the illustrations of the visionary Book of Revelation, even includes the future end of the world. The surprisingly modern-looking, sometimes hallucinatory illustrations and the cursory descriptions of the Book of Miracles strikingly convey a unique view of the concerns and anxieties of the 16th century, of apocalyptic thinking and eschatological expectation. The present facsimile volume reproduces the Book of Miracles in its entirety for the first time and thus makes one of the most important works of the German Renaissance finally available to art lovers and scholars. The introduction puts the codex in its cultural and historical context, and an extensive description of the manuscript and its miniatures, as well as a complete transcript of the text, accompany the facsimile in an appendix. The reproduction of the paintings is superb and the book itself is boxed beautifully. The additional book explaining each picture is really useful and points out things you might not notice otherwise. 560 pages. Beautiful coloured plates on marbled paper in superb hardback covers. Together with a separate stiff card cover book accompanying, with a complete mine of information relating to textual and pictorial sources of the manuscript in English / German / French. in fine condition in a sturdy box as issued. Fine and unmarked. Very heavy - 3.4Kg unpacked - may require a postal supplement at cost. a perfect presentable or collectable copy with no evidence of handling. See scans and email for many more.
