Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. Fifth Printing. 183 Pages. This is a 1966 Fifth Printing of the 1952 Copyright. Red paper covers. No defects noted and interior pages are flawless. In 1943 the military services brought to the colleges the problem of teaching military personnel to speak Chinese as quickly as possible. It was soon realized that the time demanded departure from the time-honored method of starting with the Chinese ideograph. The character approach necessarily slowed up the learner's acquisition of fluency. The obvious alternative was to use romanticized materials as the medium of instruction and delay introduction of the ideograph until a degree of fluency had been attained. Teachers using the new approach realized its advantages. Classroom procedure based on this text will necessarily differ with the teacher. Following the text, two types of teaching aids are included: questions in Chinese on each chapter of the text, and English sentences for translation into Chinese. Since this textbook aims at fluency in the spoken language, the lesson should be introduced orally rather than visually. If the instructor can give this oral introduction by reading the chapter interpretively to the class, that is probably the ideal approach.
