Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 477 pages. In this fifth of six volumes in a major publishing enterprise, Huxley continues to explore the role of science and technology in modern culture, and seeks a final level of foundational Truth that might provide the basis for his growing interest in religious mysticism. His philosophy of history took its final form in this period. At their best, Huxley's essays stand among the finest examples of the genre in modern literature. "A remarkable publishing event.beautifully produced and authoritatively edited."―Jeffrey Hart. "He writes with an easy assurance and a command of classical and modern cross-references,"―Christopher Hitchens, Los Angeles Times. "There is much to enjoy in these volumes.they are important as a document of his times, and of a window on to a stage in the evolution of his mind."―Economist. "You have to marvel at the range of [Huxley's] interests and the intelligence with which he explores them. What we experience in this high journalism is a man of intelligence, sensibility, and formidable erudition engaging his era and struggling for equilibrium while sharing the widespread perception that something ghastly has happened to European civilization. [edited by] W W Norton & Company 1997 12 3/8" x 9 3/4" Long Island, particularly the North Shore, was the site of some of the most lavish and extravagant residences in the world. The island's beauty, its proximity and easy travel access to New York, and its suitability for yachting and other recreational pursuits made it the perfect place for the leisure class. From the Civil War to World War II, almost 1000 estates were built there, often by the nation's richest families--Morgan, Vanderbilt, Hearst, Astor, Woolworth, Chrysler, Whitney, Tiffany, Frick, and Guggenheim, to name a few. Long Island's rich architectural history is presented in this important and long-awaited volume. It is at once a fascinating glimpse at the homes of some of America's wealthiest families and a complete compendium of the architects who designed these breathtaking houses. Among them are Delano &Aldrich; Cass Gilbert; Richard Morris Hunt; McKim, Mead &White; Horace Trumbauer; Calvert Vaux; and Warren &Wetmore. An illustrated treasury of the most magnificent Long Island mansions and a compendium of the architects who designed them.

Softcover. Condition: Fine. Magazine. (10)pp. Single sheets printed both sides, except for final sheet, and secured with a staple. Fine with the address for City Lights Bookshop crossed out and another handwritten underneath, as issued. An influential mimeograph published by Jones and di Prima featuring some of the most important poets of the 20th Century. Unlike other magazines, this so-called "newsletter" was distributed via a mailing list, many of which were noted poets, journalists, critics, publishers and artists. For this reason, most copies were hand addressed or affixed with a mailing label and stamp, and folded for mailing. This copy is remarkably pristine with no writing, stamp, or label. The issue features contributions from Lew Welch, Richard Baker, Dale Landers, Robert Creeley, and A.B. Spellman.
