Grade 4-6-Pullman's popular I Was a Rat! (Knopf, 2000), as translated here, is the tale of a little boy named Rogelio who insists to all who would listen that he was once a rat. A kindly couple tries to teach him how to act like a real boy. Circumstances and events conspire against him, and the boy/rat, who can't help but succumb to his rodent instincts at the worst possible times, ends up having one unfortunate adventure after another. Readers witness human behavior at its worst and rodent behavior at its best, and are challenged indirectly to make the obvious comparison. The author uses a parody of yellow journalism and tabloid sensationalism to advance the picaresque story line while adding a great deal of age-appropriate humor to the tale. The mystery of Rogelio's transformation from rat to boy is revealed at the very end of the book with an indirect reference to the Cinderella story.
