Discover original steampunk tales in this anthology of stories written before there were actual rocketships, atomic power, digital computers, or readily available electricity. The modern day steampunk genre is a reinventing of the past through the eyes of its inventors and adventures, but this collection is from real Victorians and Edwardians who saw the future potential of science and its daring possibilities. Steam-powered automobiles, submarines, and robots are featured alongside great airships and spaceships in these bold and creative stories of hope, triumph, and disaster.

From School Library Journal:
Gr 10 Up–Steampunk has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. Many books for children and teens have incorporated some of the genre's more popular elements, such as clockwork automatons, mad scientists, intrepid adventurers, and steam-powered technology. But to truly appreciate steampunk, one must go back to the very beginning, back to the time when the technology in the stories wasn't anachronistic, but rather, was visionary. This collection, written around the beginning of the 19th century, includes stories set in the early 1900s as well as those set in a distant future. They all have in common a Victorian sensibility and an idea of the possibilities inherent in technology, whether dangerous or beneficial to mankind. Included among them is the tale of an eerily constructed automaton that longs to be free from his oppressive creator, a nearly deadly train trip through a tunnel across the Strait of Gibraltar, a man frozen and reawakened in a far-distant future where he discovers a love he thought lost, a story of vampire bats that feed on the blood of humans, and the story of our world almost destroyed by a new method of food production. Within this collection, readers will find romance, mystery, adventure, and, of course, the iconic steampunk airship.–Heather M. Campbell, formerly at Philip S. Book Description Luis Ortiz (illustrator). New York: Nonstop Press:, 2010. First edition, TPBO, Trade paperback, New, 236 pp. Cover artwork by: Luis Ortiz Very nice. Very Good. Very important. Very Cool. Real steampunk stuff or, more accurately, original steam-powered stories from before there were rockets, atomic power or digital computers. Ashley, according to this reporter, is one of the most knowledgeable and discerning editors and compilers of all time and you can trust his judgment completely. No household names herein, and I can't pretend to be familiar with all the contributors or the works, but if you have any interest in vintage SF, this is an anthology you simply can't be without. Thrills, spills and steam-powered fun in fantastical settings - here for the reading. Highly recommended. First edition, TPBO, Trade paperback, New, Seller Inventory # 44777
