Childhood may be changing, but todays cable-ready, all-too-worldly kids are still just kids and should be treated that way. William J. Doherty does not want to recreate childhood as it was in simpler times, he merely wants to help parents adapt to the changes and create an even better future. Dohertys new book, Take Back Your Kids, offers a blueprint to do just that.

Too often, Doherty believes, parents merely provide services and opportunities for children, who in turn consider themselves "consumers of parental services." Hierarchy has diminished. Parents regularly make sacrifices in time and money they perceive to benefit their children. Take Back Your Kids shows occasionally saying no to a childs wish, denying a costly and time-consuming opportunity, allows for more meaningful family moments together at meals, church services and volunteer activities.

Take Back Your Kids gives parents a clear picture of what they should expect from themselves and their children. Doherty describes the skills necessary to be a confident parent--the importance of firm boundaries on behavior, an understanding of when to be flexible, and the courage to express constructive anger and endure the consequences. A good parent may be unpopular from time to time, but children respect and appreciate the exercise of authority in the context of loving family relationships.

Doherty concedes that maintaining those relationships may be difficult amid modern media distractions and fractured families. Take Back Your Kids describes how to monitor media exposure in a culture of constant television and Internet-literate eight-year-olds. He explains why responsible fatherhood may be the most untapped resource in raising children. And he offers advice for co-parents, single parents and step-parents alike to transcend their individual situations and discover the path to loving, respectful and productive relationships with their children.

From the Back Cover:
We can be both sensitive and in charge.

Dr. William Doherty shows you how. Take Back Your Kids is a timely, confidence-building book that backs up fresh insights with personal experience and advice you can rely on.

Take Back Your Kids shows how to protect children from the me-first consumer culture by giving them the love and limits they need. I recommend this wonderful book without reservation.

About the Author:
William J. Doherty's family places great value on time together. He grew up in a tight-knit Irish-American working class family where "family-time was the highest priority." And when Dohertys grown children were young he restricted his travel to emphasize the importance of family rituals.

A sought after public speaker, Doherty presents talks and workshops across the nation on family-life issues. Involved in many areas from developing family rituals to health care to ethics and morality to fatherhood research to taking back family time, his work "cuts across ideological lines."

He has published numerous academic papers, articles and books including Soul Searching: Why Psychotherapy Must Promote Moral Responsibility. Receiving widespread acclaim, Soul Searching was the stimulus for the creation of a national network of forums for practicing therapists challenging the mental health community for neglecting the values dimension of therapy. His most recent book, The Intentional Family, shows how families can use everyday rituals to improve the quality of their common life.

Doherty is a professor of family social science and director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program at the University of Minnesota. He also continues his practice as a marriage and family therapist--as he as done for the past 22 years.

He is the immediate past president of the National Council on Family Relations, the nations oldest family studies and family education organization, and is co-director of the Family Healthcare Coalition.

In 1992, Doherty was awarded the Significant Contribution to the Field of Marriage and Family Therapy Award from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. He has won numerous teaching awards, including the University of Minnesotas McFarland Creative Teaching Award in 1990. In 1997, The Utne Reader named Doherty one of the 10 most visionary therapists in America.

Doherty received a degree in philosophy in 1968 from St. Pauls College, Washington, D.C., and a masters in theology in 1970. In 1974, he received a masters in child development and family relations from the University of Connecticut and obtained a Ph.D. in family studies in 1978.

Doherty lives with his wife Leah in Roseville, Minn. where they have their own connection ritual--a nightly meeting in their family hot tub to discuss the days events.
