Barrie and Dorothy Hawkins don't quite realize what they are getting themselves into when they take on the challenge of rescuing and fostering orphan dogs. Every canine character has a surprise in store; among them are Monty, the dog with a taste for cheese; Oscar, who has never been walked or played with but finds a new zest for life at the age of twelve; and Digby, the enormous ex–guard dog who, when he’s not squashing daisies, is squashing Barrie’s foot. Barrie and Dorothy welcome them all into their hearts and home, doing whatever it takes to change the dogs' lives for the better—and in the process changing their own lives, too.

About the Author:
Barrie Hawkins lives with his wife, Dorothy, in a rural village in Cambridgeshire, England. The cofounder and chairman of the German shepherd rescue group GSD Homefinders, Hawkins is a freelance writer and an experienced public speaker who often gives talks about his work with dogs.
From Booklist:
After losing Elsa, their German shepherd, author Barrie Hawkins and his wife, Dorothy, decided to rescue what they call orphan dogsdogs whose owners could no longer keep them, dogs who had been abused or neglected, dogs too big for other fostering groups to take in. German shepherds who needed a good home. This truly heartwarming book begins with the arrival of a former junkyard guard dog, sans collar or any other means of control, who becomes dog number seven after the author corrals him with a rugby tackle. Backtracking to their start in the work of rehoming needy dogs, the author recounts the decision to foster just prior to his wifes major surgery, and of the two new dogs who awaited her when she came home. He tells of Mille, the Worlds Smallest German Shepherd, and of how she saved her widowered new owner as much as he saved her. Of Jess, the dog who was supposed to be euthanized because of a revenge-seeking boyfriend and how Jess ended up as a police dog. Of the brother-sister pair who were adopted by a motorcycle-riding gay couple; of Oscar, who spent 11 years shut in a pen and who had to be taught to play; and of Friend, found emaciated and covered with sores, who so thrived with his new owners that the author didnt recognize him the next time he saw him. This lovely book brings smiles and tears in equal amounts. --Nancy Bent
