Four slice-of-toddler-life vignettes, while perky and realistic, don't add up to a great deal in this slim volume. In the title tale, a spirited girl imitates her friend's antics until the two bump heads; they bounce right back and the girl suggests they "play it again." In the subsequent entries, the child poses some outlandish "what if" questions to her stuffed teddy bear; doesn't do a very good job of sharing toys when a friend comes to play; and reassures her bear when he fails to win the "best-dressed teddy" contest. Thompson's (Bumpety Bump) sketchy, vibrant watercolor-and-ink illustrations fluidly transmit the young heroine's exuberance. Ages 3-up.

Ages 2^-5. In a style reminiscent of Shirley Hughes, this picture book is about a red-haired little girl who narrates four short tales about play. In one story, her friend comes over and leads the way in boisterous games of head over heels and higgledy-piggledy. In another, things don't go so well, and she resents having to share with a visitor. When she plays alone, her teddy bear says just what she wants him to say. The watercolor-and-ink illustrations express the feeling and exuberant movement of the simple, direct words.
