Do people with ADHD have a "deficit" and a "disorder"? Or are they just different in some ways from people around them? In Distant Drums, Different Drummers, Barbara Ingersoll presents a more positive perspective on ADHD - one that stresses the value of individual differences. From this perspective, ADHD is a set of traits that has been passed from generation to generation because these traits were important for the survival of human beings over many thousands of years. From the Inside Flap:
"I know Dr. Barbara Ingersoll to be a superb, devoted clinician -- sensitive, empathic, truthful, and a profoundly creative thinker. Years before I met her and worked with her, I was recommending her book 'Your Hyperactive Child' to parents of my patients as the best book of its type. DISTANT DRUMS, DIFFERENT DRUMMERS is written for those same parents and for young people themselves. It is designed not only to help them understand their ADHD, but to destigmatize their differences and offer suggestions for how to deal with them. It should be read by all children with ADHD and their parents as a beginning antidote to the self-esteem problems that so often tragically complicate their lives."

Harold I. Eist, M.D., Past President, American Psychiatric Association
