Cultural writing. Essays. Latina Studies. This book is a compilation of essays written by talented contemporary Latina writers in the United States. These essays illuminate the ways life and craft are entwined and stand as a courageous testament to the odds Latina writers must overcome to clear the space and achieve a voice in our society. Honest and open, the selected writers discuss the historical, linguistic, political, economic, and cultural realities that have shaped them as women writers of color in the United States. Corpi's anthology is a major contribution to the growing body of work by insightful and politically conscious Latina writers, broadening the scope beyond nationalist literary borders.

From Library Journal:
In some Latin American cultures, mascaras (masks) represent the concealment of one's true feelings. In this collection of essays, however, 15 contemporary women writers openly describe the challenges they endured while developing their identities as both Latinas or Chicanas and as Americans. The editor, Lucha Corpi, is the author of several books with Chicano themes, including the detective novel, Cactus Blood (LJ 3/1/95). All of these authors expose the many cultural, political, and linguistic barriers to their success. For Sandra Cisneros, it involved a patriarchal Mexican father. For Julia Alvarez, it involved a scarcity of children's books in the Dominican Republic. Yet the essays call attention to a growing body of American literature by women of color that transcends gender and place. Accompanied by portraits and short biographies and bibliographies, these pieces will be interesting and inspiring reading for men and women of all ages and backgrounds. Recommended for all Hispanic and larger literary collections in public libraries.?Rebecca Martin, Northern Illinois Univ. Lib, DeKalb
