From School Library Journal:
Grade 7-9-- Two attractive introductions to motorsports. Autocross Racing focuses on competitions run in parking lots through courses of pylons designed by amateur auto clubs. A list of specific events is included with a brief description of the features that make them interesting or unique. Some Pro Solo, hill climbs, and time trials are mentioned for those looking for more challenging activities. The bulk of the text deals with skills needed by autocross drivers. It is suggested that those not old enough to drive can try Atari's ``Race Drivin''' video arcade game or set up an event for bicycles. Rally Racing concerns professional competition, describing typical courses, required skills and responsibilities, in addition to specialized equipment and vehicle modifications necessary. ``Gimmick'' rallies featuring scavenger hunts, instructions in code, or odd activities are mentioned as the type of events enjoyed by amateurs. A substantial portion of the text is devoted to detailing ways in which a person can acquire basic rallying skills and become involved in the sport. Knudson's Rallying (Lerner, 1981) and Denan's Hot on Wheels (Troll, 1980) are similar in scope and appearance. Stephenson's books are generously decorated with full-color action photographs and sample course diagrams. Addresses for organizations to contact for further information are appended. --Ann G.
