In this series of essays, the authors aim to analyze the relationship between contemporary literary theory and its practice. The authors have selected twelve of the most prominent, influential and far-reaching theoretical positions currently available, such as hermeneutics, archetypal criticism, deconstruction, psychoanalysis, feminism and Marxism. In a way that the general reader can easily access, Atikins and Morrow discuss the primary features, background, strategies and implications of those theories which are most influential at the present time.

About the Author:

G. Douglas Atkins is a professor and coordinator of graduate studies in English at the University of Kansas. Among his books is Reading Deconstruction/Deconstructive Reading, named by Choice as an outstanding Academic Book.

Laura Morrow is associate professor of English at Louisiana State University, Shreveport. Her articles have appeared in such publications as Milton Quarterly, Studies in American Drama, and the Shakespeare as Film Newsletter.

Review:
"The editors aimed for a 'textbook' that 'relates contemporary theory to critical and pedagogical practice.' They successfully guided their twelve contributors to produce essays 'directed to and written expressly for the non-specialist, teacher, student, and "general reader," still in need of succinct but detailed, clear, and accessible introductions to the theoretical positions that clamor for attention and claim privilege―and that have so much to offer.' Professor Atkins's introduction is both inviting and reassuring to those who would like just such a textbook."―American Literature

"In these days of multitudinous and revolutionary theories of literature, most linked by linguistic esoterica and many squeezed under the accommodating umbrella of reader response, any systematic and simplified presentation for the novice theorist is welcome. Contemporary Literary Theory undertakes just such a mission and, by and large, does it well."―World Literature Today
