Gr 2-3--Brittan gives very basic information on Thailand's vegetation, animals, culture, language, farming (rice-growing), the klongs or canals of Bangkok, the Buddhist religion, and arts and crafts. Pronunciations immediately follow words deemed difficult; definitions are in the appended glossary. Full-color photographs appear opposite each page of text. The only map, a small inset, shows Thailand only in relation to its immediate neighbors. King Ramkhamhaeng's name has been simplified to Rama Kamheng and unfortunately indexed under Kamheng. Picture captions and the text do not fully explain the photographs: Why show Buddhist monks dressed in brown while saying they wear orange robes? Why not a photo of the written language to accompany the text on language, instead of one showing smiling children? A less-than-successful effort.
