Gr. 3-6, younger for reading aloud. Poetry and prose combine with appealing illustrations in this well-designed anthology for young Christian children. Interspersing Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments are poems and songs directed toward a wide age range. The Lord's Prayer, poems by Emily Dickinson and Christina Rossetti, and a simple Breton fisherman's prayer are all included. The traditional text is accessible and brief enough to tackle in a bedtime read, although the language and concepts are often sophisticated, and younger children will most likely need help plowing through. But Kady MacDonald Denton's bright watercolor-brushed drawings, attractively balanced with the text, clearly mirror the narrative and will help hold children's interest in the stories.
