The Singing Green: New and Selected Poems for All Seasons - Hardcover

Grade 4-8-- Eve Merriam loved language, and this anthology of new and previously published but out-of-print poems is a fine representation of all of the things she did best. The book is divided into two sections, one that has 39 lighthearted poems, and another that has 41 more serious selections. The sounds of angry words in ``Mean Song'' makes a fine pairing with Merriam's picture book Fighting Words (Morrow, 1992). Also included are poems about television, plastic, fast food, and other aspects of popular culture that would make great discussion starters. Merriam's greatest gift was her ability to convey to young readers the richness of words through poetry. Her obvious joy in letters of the alphabet and in synonyms is clear in her work.
