Gr. 2^-4. After Brigid wishes for a fairy godmother to help her overcome her fear of jumping off the new diving board, a new girl, Maribel Jump, suddenly appears in town. Maribel convinces Brigid that by doing four special things--including sleeping upside down the night before the jump--she can overcome her fears. A perplexed Brigid follows the advice, and sure enough, she's able to make the jump. Black-and-white drawings add visual appeal to the story, and Brigid is a likable character whose embarrassment and self-consciousness will ring true to kids. However, the "magical" solution to Brigid's problem may leave some children with the idea that they're powerless to help themselves. Lauren Peterson
