The Mouse That Jack Built - Hardcover

PreSchool-Grade 2. In this variation of "The House That Jack Built," Jack, a little rabbit, builds a snowmouse. The poem cumulates as he adds various features to his creation?a nose, whiskers, a hat, etc. At first the lines flow well, but toward the end the rhyming becomes choppy and no longer follows the traditional pattern. The illustrations are typical Szekeres: adorable bunnies and sweet mice. Unfortunately, there are several places where the text and illustrations do not match. At one point Mama is said to call Jack "with a scold," but her grinning expression shows no reprimand. If there is a need for endearing animals cavorting in the snow, select instead Mick Inkpen's Kipper's Snowy Day (Harcourt, 1996) or Jonathan London's Froggy Gets Dressed (Viking, 1992).?Elaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR
