Welcome to Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s The Idiot. In this edition of this novel, first published in 1869, we are proud to offer you the best edition of this literary masterpiece featuring one of the most acclaimed classics of all times. The Idiot was first published serially in The Russian Messenger between 1868 and 1869. The Idiot is often considered one of the most brilliant literary achievements of the "Golden Age" of Russian literature. In The Idiot, the 26-year-old Prince Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin returns to Russia after spending several years at a Swiss sanatorium. Scorned by the society of St. Petersburg for his trusting nature and naiveté, he finds himself at the center of a struggle between a beautiful kept woman and a virtuous and pretty young girl, both of whom win his affection. Unfortunately, Myshkin's very goodness precipitates disaster, leaving the impression that, in a world obsessed with money, power, and sexual conquest, a sanatorium may be the only place for a saint. From the Back Cover:
'The chief thing is that they all need him' -thus Dostoyevsky described Prince Myshkin, the hero of perhaps his most remarkable novel. As the still, radiant center of a plot whose turbulent action is extraordinary even for Dostoyevsky, Myshkin succeeds in dominating through sheer force a personality a cast of characters who vividly and violently embody the passions and conflicts of the 19th century Russia.
About the Author:

FyodorDostoyevsky (18211881), one of nineteenth-century Russias greatest novelists, spent four years in a convict prison in Siberia, after which he was obliged to enlist in the army. In later years his penchant for gambling sent him deeply into debt. Most of his important works were written after 1864, including Notes from Underground, Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov, all available from Penguin Classics.

A New Translation by Henry and Olga Carlisle. With an introduction by Harold Rosenberg. 640 pages. paperback. CE1799. Cover art: James Hill. keywords: Signet Classic Paperback. FROM THE PUBLISHER - The chief thing is that they all need him - thus Dostoyevsky described Prince Vyshkin, the hero of perhaps his most remarkable novel- As the still, radiant center of a plot whose turbulent action is extraordinary even for Dostoyevsky, Myshkin succeeds in dominating through sheer force of personality a cast of characters who vividly and violently embody the passions and conflicts of 19th-century Russia. The author's concern with sin and redemption is here in full measure; but there is another, more powerful motive as well: a desire to offer man a new alternative in facing the painful dilemmas of the human condition- As Harold Rosenberg writes in his Introduction to this notabbe new translation: Myshkin has passed from literature into social history. He is a rival of those potent fictions the Dandy, the Superman, The Proletariat . He, too, is a specter haunting Europe. He is the original of those who seek to persuade through self-renunciation, from the who 'understands' his mistress' infidelities to Children of the 1960s convinced of the perfidiousness of the adult mind. inventory #38769.
