Elizabeth Benedict is a graduate of Barnard College and the author of five novels, including the bestseller Almost and the National Book Award finalist Slow Dancing. She is the editor of the anthologies What My Mother Gave Me, a New York Times bestseller, and Mentors, Muses & Monsters, and has written for the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times, Esquire, and the Huffington Post, the Rumpus, and Tin House. Two of her essays have been selected for Best American Essays collections. She has taught widely and works as a writing coach and editor.
Esme Singer grows up in the shadow of a beautiful but immature and alcoholic mother. Sadly estranged from her long-distance father, who is always about to cash in on a sure-fire moneymaking scheme, she has little interest in her mother's various husbands and lovers. Esme longs for the stability of her friend Leah's household, although she believes Leah's parents to be intellectually far superior to her. Yet it is Leah's famous photographer father who encourages the adolescent Esme to pursue her talent for photography. Off to art school goes Esme, seeking and finding social and intellectual maturation all at once. Told with humor and sensitivity, Esme's story will appeal to younger women with similar stories.
