This first novel by a young Irish writer is about the rite of passage of a ten year old boy on the streets of Belfast in the summer of 1969. The principle issues which characterize the Ulster troubles are explored as the tale unravels. Glenn Patterson is twenty-six and was born and bred in Belfast. In 1982 he left for the University of East Anglia, from where he graduated with an MA in Creative Writing.

one of the great novels about Ulster at the start of its Troubles -- Carlo Gebler Remarkably assured... Patterson's novel, needless to say, is neither afraid nor prejudiced, but courageously magnanimous. Guardian A novel of visionary power that sees through a child's eyes a Belfast about to explode intp sectarian strife. Sunday Tribune This is a very good novel and deserves your immediate attention.
