Review:
This collection of brief remembrances, embarrassing moments, and cinematic representations of that greatest of high school horrors, the prom, is a quick and funny read. Full of photos from your favorite '80s teen films and images of outfits so flashy they'd startle Ray Charles, Tales from the Prom is intermittently sad and human. There's "David," who tells of how the prom was his last effort at heterosexuality, "Anonymous," whose prom experience convinced her it was time to join a 12-step program, and "Jen," whose gorgeous boyfriend passed out before the dance and left her looking like a dateless loser. In many ways, Tales from the Prom is like a prom date: it comes in an ugly package, but inside it's funny and pathetic in an endearing way. --James DiGiovanna
