A few pages on environmental problems give cogent explanations of the greenhouse effect, global warming, and acid rain. The full-color illustrations and photographs are striking and effective. On a lighter note, a cartoon demonstrates the Beaufort Scale in a way that even the youngest reader can understand. In the "World Maps" section, political and physical maps are shown, and the differences between them are explained. Color-coded "Regions of the World" are each explored in multipage spreads that cover all essential facts in a succinct yet comprehensive manner. The "Countries at a Glance" section neatly summarizes current statistics, providing one-stop shopping for information on population, size, language, currency, and more.
