Ashburner's wife had been sporting about his need for a rest, packing him off on a holiday to Scotland. But in the taxi he changed his luggage labels and checked in for a flight to Moscow. He was the official companion to the artist Nina St Clair - but within 48 hours Nina had vanished.

About the Author:
Beryl Bainbridge wrote seventeen novels, two travel books and five plays for stage and television, she was shortlisted for the Booker Prize five times, and won literary awards including the Whitbread Prize and the Author of the Year Award at the British Book Awards. She died in July 2010.
From AudioFile:
Ashburner is off on an adventure. His conscience nags at him as he prepares to leave his wife, home, and dog for an intense two weeks with Nina, but he shrugs off the guilt and carries on. Michael Tudor Barnes is the ideal reader for this novel--his discreet narration allows the plot to be the center of the listener's attention as Ashburner's dalliance leads him on a tangled path. He tells his wife he is off on a fishing trip, but instead he boards a plane for Moscow with Nina, his unlikely mistress. (Even he cannot understand why he sought out her dark, animated beauty and why she might be interested in his heavy, aging mediocrity.) This novel grabs the listener's attention right away and holds it the entire way. L.B.F. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
