The Collins Discovery World Atlas is published in association with America's preeminent authority, the Smithsonian Institution.

Collins world atlases present a dynamic view of today's world, bringing it to life through innovative maps, stunning images, and thou-sands of geographical facts and stats. They offer an exciting perspective on how the world is made up, how it looks, and how it works.

The new Discovery atlas allows us to explore the world, providing a fascinating picture of how it looks today and an insight into the key global issues. Detailed, highly accurate maps cover the world in the distinctive Collins style. Thematic pages provide detailed information on, and interpretations of, major geo themes and global issues including AIDS, the drug trade, the world economy, population, telecommunications, and environmental change. Information on all the world's states and territories, and statistics on key socioeconomic indicators, complete the picture. Internet links to the most appropriate Web sites provide the opportunity to discover more.

This atlas is ideal for home and office reference, travel planning, school and college study, and for gaining new insight into how the world looks today.

From Booklist:
Originally published in Britain in 2004 as the Collins World Atlas Illustrated, this atlas now has a title change and is published in the U.S. by an imprint of HarperCollins in collaboration with the Smithsonian. The atlas has the usual introductory material in two-page spreads on world countries, climate, communications, conflict, and so forth. The pages of the introduction and the prefatory materials for each continent are eye-catching, with thumb-print color photos, boxes of facts, tables, and suggested Internet links. The maps are produced by the Collins Bartholomew digital database and are fine. However, since the atlas is only 9 by 13 inches, the print may seem small for anyone over 30.

The continent maps are most inclusive for Asia, Europe, and North America, with less than 10 pages for Africa and a few more for South America. Preceding the index are 6 pages of country statistics, including those for the economy, environment, and social indicators. The "new countries" of Palau, Eritrea, and East Timor have limited statistics--life expectancy for men in East Timor is 49.2, and 51.1 in Eritrea. The index supplies only page and grid location but does note world and state capitals and highlights the deepest lakes, highest mountains, etc. This is a good addition to school and public libraries that need a medium-sized atlas at a reasonable price.
